How I Work With You

Recovery Counselling that starts with the person, not the label.

You are more than the behaviour, and more than what has happened.

We look at the whole picture together, then build understanding, new choices and the foundations for lasting change.

The work is collaborative and develops around what you need, what is already working and what would make the greatest difference now.

Understand

Make sense of the pattern

Explore what is happening, what the behaviour has been doing for you and what may be keeping the pattern going.

Change

Build different responses

Develop practical and realistic ways of responding differently, without expecting perfection.

Sustain

Strengthen recovery

Support the relationships, routines, coping, confidence and recovery capital that help change hold over time.

There is no fixed programme to complete.

Recovery Counselling is shaped around your circumstances, priorities and pace.

Areas I Support

Recovery Support That Fits Your Experience

Addictive, compulsive and harmful behaviours can look very different. What matters is the role the behaviour is playing, how much space it is taking up and the impact it is having on your life.

01 Substance-related

Alcohol & Substance Use

Alcohol, non-prescribed substances and prescribed medication where use has become problematic or dependent.

For counselling to be appropriate, there needs to be enough stability for safe and meaningful therapeutic work. If detoxification, withdrawal management or medical treatment is needed, specialist or medical support should be involved first.

02 Behavioural

Gambling

Online gambling, sports betting, casino gambling, slots, bingo, lottery and scratch cards, and financial trading where it has developed into a gambling-like harmful pattern.

03 Behavioural

Gaming

Video, online and mobile gaming where the pattern has become difficult to control or is affecting daily life, relationships, finances, sleep or wellbeing. This can also include harmful in-game spending or gambling-like features such as loot boxes.

04 Digital

Internet & Digital Behaviours

Problematic or compulsive patterns involving social media, smartphone use, scrolling, streaming or other online content, particularly when the behaviour is difficult to manage or affecting everyday life.

05 Behavioural

Spending & Shopping

Compulsive shopping or spending, online shopping patterns and Buy Now, Pay Later related spending where the pattern is contributing to financial, emotional or relationship harm.

06 Other patterns

Other Compulsive or Harmful Behaviours

Work-related or exercise-related patterns when they have become compulsive or harmful, repetitive reward-seeking behaviours and multiple or overlapping addictive or compulsive behaviours.

Not sure where your experience fits?

You do not need to identify a particular category before getting in touch. We can talk about what is happening and whether Recovery Counselling is the right support for you.

Support for Affected Others

When the behaviour belongs to someone else, the impact can still reach you.

This support may be relevant if you are a partner, family member, parent, adult child, friend or another significant person affected by someone else’s behaviour.

Living alongside someone else’s addictive, compulsive or harmful behaviour can affect trust, finances, relationships, sleep, stress and the choices you feel able to make.

01

Make sense of what is happening

A confidential space to talk about the impact on you, including uncertainty, repeated promises, worry, anger, guilt, exhaustion or loss of trust.

02

Explore boundaries and choices

Consider what is and is not within your control, what boundaries may be needed and what feels realistic and safe in your circumstances.

03

Support your own wellbeing

The work can focus on your needs, coping, relationships and next steps, rather than making your wellbeing dependent on whether another person changes.

If you are worried about someone else’s harmful behaviour, I can support you too. You do not need the other person to be in treatment, or even to recognise that there is a problem, for you to seek support for yourself.
